5 Tips for Preparing Furniture for Your Upcoming Move

December 30, 2021

Moving can seem challenging when you have furniture pieces to move. Some pieces may require disassembling to make them easier to carry and load onto the moving truck. Other pieces may require protection to avoid getting damaged.

By using these tips, you can make sure your furniture is prepared for your moving day!

Tip #1: Measure furniture, hallways, and doorways.

You need to know if your furniture will easily fit down hallways and through doorways. For larger pieces, you may have to remove doors so they will fit through easily. If you live in an apartment, you should measure the width of stairwells or elevator space.

Tip #2: Know what you will be moving.

You may not want to move every piece of furniture you own to your new home. Any pieces you are not moving, dispose of before your move. You could sell them through a local online selling site or donate them to charity if they are in decent shape.

Tip #3: Disassemble what you can.

Take apart any furniture pieces you can do without, such as end tables, desks, etc. Make sure to take a picture of how the piece looks assembled and at each stage of the disassembling process. Place any hardware, like screws, in a zip lock bag. Use a permanent marker and write what piece the hardware is for on the outside of the bag.

Tip #4: Pack up anything that you can pack.

Pillows, cushions, blankets, etc., can all be packed into moving boxes to keep them safe during the move. Take time to write on the contents of the box on the outside on several sides. Also, make sure to write which furniture piece the contents go with and what room it should be unloaded into at your new home.

Tip #5: Wrap and protect furniture from damage.

Use furniture pads to wrap up pieces you can take apart. Secure the pads in places by wrapping cling-film around the outside of the furniture so that it is tight and secure.

Bonus Tip: How to re-fold your Elephant in a Box sofa.

Taking apart your Elephant in a Box sofa is as easy as it was to put together. Remove the seat cushions and use the straps to keep them together. Remove the fabric covers from the back and front of the sofa. Remove the support bars/beams and fold them in half. Slide the sofa together and carefully turn it over.

Place the fabric covers, linens, beams and back cushions inside the armrests. Use the remaining 2 straps to keep it together.
